Art print work brief to promote the second Ruffage night in Leeds, UK. Jim, the client, approached me with a fairly open-ended brief wanting something minimal and simplistic within a week’s turnaround.
Original artwork influenced predominantly by 80/90s NYC subway art/graf culture and Ben Mathers’ dreadlocks. Generative forms (big up Joshua Davis), mixed up vectors and a massive impulse of monotone have all helped.
A3 poster is printed on 200GSM matt vs. A6 double-sided, full-colour, flyer prints at 350GSM on gloss - saaaweet!
'I asked Lewis to come up with a poster and flyer design for a small Dubstep night I was running. The brief I gave him was somewhat muddled other than a few mumblings about keeping it minimal and uncluttered and that I was determined to keep a very wide berth of the orthodoxy which dominates the promotional designs for most Drum & Bass nights.
Lewis came up with a very effective design which gave my night a very distinct visual identity. At first, I was a little unsure of the addition of the colour images, finding the selection of the items a little arbitrary but, ultimately, I came to see the necessity of infusing some colour.
The general reaction to the designs was incredibly positive. I think that maybe the most telling affirmation by people overall was the fact that on the night itself of the ten posters put up around the club, only one was remaining at the end, having seen many of the people present take one home as a souvenir!'
